Lutein, Zinc, and Antioxidants for Eye Health

VISION GUARD combines lutein with vitamins C and E, zinc, copper, bilberry, and eyebright. These ingredients are commonly used in eye-health supplements, but their evidence and roles are not interchangeable.

Lutein and the macula

Lutein is a carotenoid that accumulates in the macula, the central region of the retina responsible for detailed vision. The National Eye Institute studied lutein and related antioxidants in AREDS2, a specific high-dose formulation for people with intermediate or advanced age-related macular degeneration. Those findings should not be generalized to every eye supplement or to people without AMD.

Antioxidant nutrients

Vitamins C and E contribute to antioxidant defenses. Zinc is an essential mineral, and copper is often paired with higher zinc intake because prolonged high-dose zinc can affect copper status. Bilberry and eyebright have traditional uses, but stronger human evidence is needed for broad vision claims.

Bottom line: these nutrients are intended to support normal eye nutrition and antioxidant status, not replace an eye exam or treat vision loss. Learn about the evidence from the National Eye Institute.
